HiringSmart Reading List

This past week has been a rather interesting one for us here at HiringSmart thanks to an article that appeared in the Business Section of the Halifax Chronicle Herald and then re-appeared in other papers across the country. The reporter from the paper tells me that half of the readership of the paper is now reading it online. That makes totally sense when you consider that the article is about how social media is now being used as a recruitment tool. Thanks again everyone for your kind words about our latest media coverage. Together we are getting the message out there that when 70% of the population is at some level disengaged in their work - we need to look for a smarter way to select and manage people.

Also this past week I was asked to recommend my favourite books on the subject of Social Media for beginners. To understand Social Media and recruitment you need to understand the new world of marketing. Attracting candidates is a marketing function - not an HR function.

The New Influencers - A Marketer's Guide to the New Social Media
Paul Gillin, Quill Driver Books

The New Rules of Marketing and PR
David Meerman Scott

Media Rules
Brian Reich and Dan Solomon

Depending on your knowledge level you will learn somthing new from each of these books. If you are looking to understand how it works, read the New Influencers first.

I agree with your statement that attracting candidates is a marketing function.

New candidates are also looking for the best fit and it goes further than a mere job description.

Values, mission statement, strategy ... those are the key elements that drive motivation and commitment.

As we all know, social media is efficient for building strong relationships not for friending candidates and spamming them.

Then, not only recruiters should interact with them, employees and customers can add value to the conversation and bring more clarity. I think that innovative companies will be more focused on the power of their employer brand.

Hi,

I have just finished reading "Tribes" by Seth Godin. The core theme of the book is not necessarily about social networks and social network marketing, its about the advantages and necessity of leadership in relation to marketing.

Of course, social networks are a great place to start in terms of leadership, as your "friends" are all in one place, have a greater chance of listening to what you have to say because they already know (and trust) you and contacting them is extremely easy.

Tribes is a good book, easy to read, informative offers a good point of view and real life examples.
